Our history.

Small beginnings

Grace Harbor began in 1886 after a tent meeting was held in Kalamazoo by Sebastian Michels. The group Michels gathered was a part of a new movement of Bible-believing people based in Grand Junction, MI. The first pastor of this new church in Kalamazoo was Rev. William Hartman for over 50 years. He led this small group of people who decided to follow Jesus at that first tent meeting. They began meeting in homes, and in 1908, they were given some land on Ransom St., which became the site for the first building of the Kalamazoo Church of God.  In 1920 the church built a new building on N. Rose St. where they worshipped until 1960.  In a grand procession from Rose street to Gorham Lane, they occupied the  building on Gorham lane and became the Westwood Church of God.  In 2014, the church began a revision process by adding the name "Grace Harbor Church" to their identity to indicate the kind of people and church they would become - a welcoming and compassionate people - providing a safe place for all who would join them to follow Jesus.  In January 2024, following the Covid pandemic, the congregation stepped out in faith for the future and exchanged their buidling on Gorham Lane for a new buidling on Alamo Dr. where the congregation currently worships and reaches out to the community.  This unique exchange happened in partnership with the Community Presbyterian Church, by the Grace of God and the unity of believers cross denominationally.  A new season of minstry was begun in this move and the possiblities for growth and impact are many!.
